Philippe Starck

Philippe Starck, the renowned French designer, made his yachting debut with the 213-foot Feadship Wedge Too. Designed in collaboration with De Voogt Naval Architects and completed in 2003, the yacht features Starck's signature whimsical and unconventional interior details.

A Design Icon's Foray into Yachting

Philippe Starck, the French designer known for his prolific and often provocative work across countless industries, entered the world of superyachts with the 213-foot Feadship Wedge Too. Completed in 2003 at the De Vries Shipyard in Holland, the project was a collaboration with De Voogt Naval Architects. Starck, a self-proclaimed environmentalist, initially hesitated but accepted the commission to help create a yacht that was 'not a mountain of gold'.

The Whimsical Interior of Wedge Too

While the exterior of Wedge Too reflects the sensible, durable choices of Feadship (such as oiled teak instead of Starck's proposed mahogany), Starck was given free rein inside. The interior is a playground of his imagination, featuring odd juxtapositions and surrealist touches. In the owners' stateroom, a traditional Louis XVI writing desk integrates a 52-inch plasma TV. The main lounge includes a large throne-like seat with silver swans as armrests.

The dining experience is equally eclectic, with guests able to choose from a banquette, a plastic urn, a metal or wooden chair, a cube resembling an ice block, or a gnome. A child's seat is decorated with thousands of colored beads depicting elephants. The yacht, however, is no mere folly; it is powered by two 2,000-hp Caterpillar engines and has a range of 5,400 miles.
