American Interior Design on a Dutch Classic
Glade Johnson Design is an American interior design studio whose work features prominently in the pedigree of classic Feadship motor yachts. The firm was responsible for the interior design of the 38.7m Feadship EXCELLENCE I (hull number 809, now renamed GOLDEN RULE), launched in 1986. This raised pilothouse yacht, featuring a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, was engineered by De Voogt Naval Architects, who also handled its exterior styling. The project was managed from concept through completion by Moran Yacht & Ship, highlighting a transatlantic collaboration between American design, Dutch engineering, and international project oversight.
Design Legacy and Refit
EXCELLENCE I was built with teak decks and equipped with advanced stabilization for its era. Glade Johnson Design's interior would have defined the luxury experience aboard this Feadship for two decades before a significant refit in 2006. While the original interior details are preserved in the yacht's historical documentation, the studio's contribution represents the high level of bespoke craftsmanship expected by American owners commissioning from Dutch shipyards during the golden age of Feadship custom builds. The yacht remains a reference for De Voogt's exterior proportions complemented by distinguished American interior design.
