Tankoa Yachts Secures Concession of "Ex Privilege" Area at Port of Civitavecchia

Genoa, Italy – December 2023 – Tankoa Yachts, the renowned boutique shipyard based in Genoa, is thrilled to confirm the concession of the "Ex Privilege" area within the Port of Civitavecchia. This acquisition is a strategic milestone in Tankoa’s expansion plan, aimed at establishing a state-of-the-art center for naval shipbuilding, solidifying the shipyard's position as a key player in the luxury yacht industry.

Strategic Expansion for Enhanced Production Capabilities

As Tankoa continues to experience significant growth in the construction and sale of luxury yachts over 40 meters, the need for expanded facilities has become crucial. The Civitavecchia site was identified in 2021 as an ideal location for metalworking, hull and superstructure production, as well as the assembly and pre-assembly of yachts. This new site will complement Tankoa’s historic Genoa shipyard, which will remain responsible for final assembly.

Increased Production Capacity

At full capacity, the Civitavecchia facility will produce up to four yachts per year, each exceeding 40 meters in length. The expansion will also enable the site to conduct refit operations, pending the availability of a waterfront area for yacht hauling and launching. Tankoa plans an initial investment of €3 million to commence steel and aluminum metalworking and pre-assembly activities. This investment will also support the growth of the local business cluster, which already has the expertise necessary for these specialized tasks.

Operational and Infrastructure Developments

Tankoa's vision for the Civitavecchia facility includes internalizing welding and hull manufacturing, processes that have been outsourced until now. This move will allow Tankoa to maintain direct control over the quality of these critical components. According to Guido Orsi, Tankoa's Marketing Manager, "In Civitavecchia, we will begin operations almost immediately on one-third of the available space in the former Privilege area."

Planned infrastructure developments include the construction of a slipway and a haulage and launching basin. These will facilitate the installation of a travel lift with a capacity of 500-600 tonnes, suitable for yachts up to 60 meters in length. Larger yachts will utilize the existing 92-meter floating dry dock.

Employment and Economic Impact

Tankoa’s expansion into Civitavecchia is expected to significantly boost local employment, with plans to grow the workforce to between 250 and 350 employees over the next five years. This increase will span various company functions and skilled labor roles, in collaboration with Tankoa’s partners.

A Strategic Geographic and Industrial Move

Civitavecchia’s location makes it a natural extension of the activities that have thrived in the region between Livorno and Genoa over the past 150 years—a region that produces over 30% of the world's megayachts and hosts the largest cluster of the global yachting industry. Tankoa's initiative underscores the area's potential for shipbuilding, strengthening its role in the global luxury yacht market.
