Where Wisdom Meets Waves: Heesen Announces Hull and Superstructure Joining for Project Sophia
Heesen Yachts proudly announces a significant milestone in the construction of YN 21150, code-named Project Sophia. On June 26, 2024, the hull and superstructure of this 50m fast cruising yacht were successfully joined, marking a pivotal step towards her completion.
Project Sophia epitomizes Heesen's expertise in building fast aluminium yachts with reduced fuel consumption. Her sporty exterior lines are designed by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, while her luxurious interior is crafted by Cristiano Gatto Design.
In Ancient Rome, the proverb "nomen est omen" means "the name is a sign." The name Sophia, rich in meaning, embodies cleverness, skill, wisdom, and intelligence—qualities that align with Heesen's craftsmanship and innovation. Additionally, the name evokes the charm and talent of Academy Award-winning actress Sophia Loren, mirroring the yacht's pleasing aesthetics.
During the joining ceremony, the technological beauty of Project Sophia emerged as her hull, meticulously welded by 20 to 40 skilled craftsmen in Shed 6, was revealed. Heesen remains one of the few shipyards to construct its own aluminium hulls in-house, underscoring the company's commitment to quality and precision. Becoming a certified Heesen welder requires over 500 hours of intensive training, ensuring each weld meets the highest standards of excellence.
Project Sophia features a hard-chine shallow draft hull designed by Heesen's in-house naval architects. With a draft of only 2.15 meters, thanks to the recessed propeller tunnel, she is perfect for cruising the crystal-clear waters of the Bahamas. Her sleek underwater body design enhances efficiency, making her 12% more fuel-efficient compared to traditional designs. Equipped with two MTU engines, 16V 4000 M65L (IMO Tier III), she reaches a top speed of 23 knots and has a transatlantic range of 3,100 nautical miles at 11 knots.
Accommodating up to twelve guests in five elegantly appointed staterooms, Project Sophia offers unparalleled comfort and luxury. The master suite on the main deck forward provides a serene retreat, while four guest cabins on the lower deck ensure ample space for family and friends. Cristiano Gatto's interior design showcases a harmonious blend of sophistication, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, with meticulous selection of materials, colors, and textures. The design exudes refined luxury, reflecting the belief that wisdom permeates every aspect of life, including the art of interior design. The interior is available in two additional atmospheres to cater to various tastes and preferences.
Currently available for sale, Project Sophia is due for delivery in Q1 2026. This exceptional vessel offers a unique opportunity to own a Dutch-quality yacht with a shortened delivery time, promising an unmatched yachting experience that combines Heesen's renowned craftsmanship with cutting-edge design and efficiency.
