Baglietto introduces new hybrid propulsion system
Baglietto, the renowned Italian shipbuilder, continues its commitment to sustainable yachting with the introduction of an innovative hybrid propulsion system developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy and CGT. This new technology marks a significant leap forward in Baglietto's mission to drive the energy transition within the yachting industry.
The cutting-edge interposed hybrid propulsion system, recently successfully bench-tested, will be integrated into Baglietto's hybrid yachts, including the T52 and DOM 133 models, starting from the year 2025. Additionally, the system is designed to be compatible with vessels equipped with the Bzero hydrogen-based technology, further expanding its versatility and sustainability.
Mr. Diego Michele Deprati, CEO of Baglietto, expressed his enthusiasm for this advancement, stating, "The new system will implement a hybrid-parallel propulsion architecture ensuring maximum flexibility, compact installation, onboard comfort, and improved mechanical and electrical efficiency." He added, "Baglietto's determination to explore innovative paths in alternative energy sources brings us closer to the goals set with the Bzero system, aimed at achieving truly sustainable yachting."
The new hybrid propulsion system features a state-of-the-art powertrain, comprising a Caterpillar C32 ACERT diesel endothermic engine and an ultracompact hybrid unit. This unit integrates a low-consumption clutch and a high-efficiency 180kW electrical machine within a remarkably confined space. The electrical machine serves a dual function, acting as an electric propulsion motor for noiseless cruising and a shaft generator system to optimize consumption. The entire powertrain is managed by the Siemens Energy BlueDrive Eco, an advanced propulsion control system.
Developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy, Stromag, and Lucchi Motori, this solution showcases the synergy of leading technologies to offer market-leading solutions promoting sustainability and energy efficiency.
The hybrid system allows for various operational modes, including:
- Diesel Mode: Utilizing diesel fuels from 100% renewable sources such as HVO (Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil) and synthetic diesel fuels (e-diesel) compliant with standard EN15940.
- Diesel Shaft Generation Mode: Operating without gensets for optimized efficiency.
- Diesel-Electric Mode: Utilizing conventional diesel gensets and variable-speed diesel gensets for speeds of up to 9 knots using bio-diesel fuels.
- Full Electric Mode: Leveraging the latest-generation Li-ion battery packs with prismatic cells, offering Baglietto yachts unprecedented range values in zero emissions mode and extended periods at anchor in complete silence.
This remarkable hybrid propulsion system underscores Baglietto's ongoing dedication to sustainable practices and represents a significant step forward in eco-friendly yachting.
